For manypeople, the idea of taking part in martial art training is an appealing one. However, a lot of these individuals are simply too nervous to give it a try! Despite the fact that martial arts classes can have a positive impact on the mind, body, and spirit, a number of prospective students don’t even get as far as a trial class, fearing that they’ll be in over their heads. If you don’t choose your martial arts school wisely, there is a possibility that you may find yourself feeling discouraged. That’s why so many residents throughout the Northeast Ohio opt to visit one of The Academy of Self-Defense 3 schools located in Akron, OH; Twinsburg, OH, and Mayfield Heights, OH.  These schools service the communities of Tallmadge, Munroe Falls, Stow, Hudson, Solon, Macedonia, Aurora, Streetsboro, Mayfield, South Euclid, Lyndhurst, and Highland Heights.

The senior Black Belt Instructors of the Academy of Self-Defense schools’ approach martial arts for the beginner in a caring and compassionate way.  They really listen to your questions and concerns.  And, the Senseis (Instructors) take the time to explain what a basic class entails…

For those trying out a martial art class for the first time, it’s normal to feel some trepidation, especially if your previous fitness regimen consisted of aerobics-style workouts or school gym classes. The first time you walk into an Academy of Self-Defense school, you may wonder what you’ve gotten yourself into!  However, despite your initial hesitation you’ll quickly discover that what these schools offer is a safe, welcoming environment in which you can work on all aspects of your health and wellness. Though the instructors at these local self-defense martial arts school never push, they do help their students to stretch their limits. You can have peace of mind knowing that your Sensei will offer the guidance you need to make your Minna Jiu-Jitsu, Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kung Fu, Aiki-Jujutsu, or T’ai Chi training a regular and cherished part of your life.

Those interested in martial arts for beginners worry that they won’t be prepared for the first class they attend.  Rest assured that when you schedule your appointment for your first class at an Academy of Self-Defense school you’ll be given instructions so you know what to expect.  Basic information such as the dress code and class structure will be explained to you by one of the Academy instructors.

You should come 15 minutes early to your first class to take care of pre-class tasks such as registration, uniform fitting, and the class waiver.  Before class officially begins, introductions will be made so you become familiar with the instructors and your peers. To make things easier for those new to training, newcomers will be paired with more experienced student who will be their “buddy” for the first class. For young beginners, both parents are encouraged to attend the first class so they can see it firsthand.

Each martial art class begins with a warm-up and stretching. The instructor will also go over mat etiquette before students practice rolling and falling down gracefully (ukemi). After that, the class practices skills and drills such as blocks, strikes, stepping patterns, and more. This is also the time when the instructor teaches self-defense techniques which are practiced with partners while the instructor watches. Toward the end of class, students perform the moves they were shown earlier so the Sensei can critique them. This check-back portion of the class is fast-paced and designed to mimic the stressful situation of a street attack.  Finally, a second activity such as working on the punching bag, or playing a skill game is presented.  Sensei always ends the class with some words of wisdom.

When you finish your first martial art class, you’ll spend time figuring out if you enjoyed it, and whether you’d like to continue with your training.  Be sure to get your after-class questions answered; talk to other students and your Sensei.  Though taking a course at The Academy of Self-Defense offers a number of benefits, the first class you try may not be a perfect fit.  Fortunately, the 3 Academy of Self-Defense schools offer multiple martial art disciplines to choose from such as T’ai Chi Ch’uan for health and Minna Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense.  The instructors at these NE Ohio schools are there to help you find a type of training that may better suit your needs.  Contact your local Academy of Self-Defense school in Akron at (330) 814-5058, in Mayfield Heights at (440) 409-6954, or in Twinsburg at (330) 237-9594, or visit our website at https://theacademyofself-defense.com.
